A Family Portrait Matters in Moments | Jo Stokes Photography

You know that awkward moment when everyone gathers for a family photo and then someone has to volunteer to take the photo and therefore is not in it? Or the moment where everyone gets into position in a mad rush and then the camera is put on a timer and someone runs into the picture and barely makes it? Of course you do, and of course you also know full well that these moments do not make for the greatest of family photos.

The quality of a family photograph is important: it is central to all involved. A DIY job is great but such photos don’t always capture special moments as well as a professional can. Zoomed in shots or shots that require specific settings, lighting, fading, and focusing can require professional equipment as well as a skillful hand (and eye, for that matter).

Family photographs are a great way to document the growth, memories, events and relationships within a family. They represent the unit of people within the picture and they can be passed down from generation to generation, just as many of us can recall receiving a photograph from a grandparent or parent.

Family photography is also great for the photographer because it is a chance to experience the love and personalities that exists between the different relationships of a family. This means that every photo shoot will be different and dynamic in its own way. The job can never really get boring!

The other advantage of investing in a family photo shoot is that each person can also get individual photos out of the shoot. There can be a variety of different images grouped in different ways. The husband and wife, wife and daughters, siblings, father and baby, and the list goes on. There are just so many different ways to capture the personality of a family and one shoot can result in so many amazing images.

The next time that you have an empty album or frame on the wall, take the time to do a professional shoot. Time goes by so fast that it really is best to capture these moments – the ages that you are, the way that you look, and the way in which your family interacts – now.
