Bangkok – Personal post!
Bangkok Hooters International Rugby Tens Tournament
My life this year has been very different ..and in some ways the same. I am commuting between Dubai and Cape Town as my husband is currently working in Dubai. I am pretty excited about this part of our lives as I am hoping that we will have more opportunity to travel. Anyway my first opportunity came when my son, Jarred and his Nadoes team were sponsored to play a tournament in Bangkok, The Bangkok Hooters International Rugby Tens Tournament. I decided to fly from Dubai for a long weekend and meet up with him and it was interesting to say the least. I was fortunate enough to get a really good deal at a superb hotel in Bangkok, called the Metropolitan and this became my base while I was there. The rugby team was more on the outskirts of Bangkok but it was fairly easy to organise a taxi and get to their hotel and from there I travelled on the bus with the them to the Bangkok Hooters International Rugby Tens tournament ..which was fun. And in retrospect, I am glad that I wasn’t booked into the same hotel as the boys …as I think it became a bit of a party fest! The first day, we all met up MBK Shopping Centre and I caught their skytrain which was a great way to get around and see the city. I was quite impressed with Jarred in the MBK shopping centre as the boy can definitely barter. He definitely got us a few good deals. The next morning I was up with the sparrows to go and watch the sunrise over the Temple of Dawn(Wat Arun) which disappointingly was being renovated ..but all was not wasted as I got to drive through China Town, see The Grand Palace which was totally overrun with Chinese tourists so early in the morning and I got to walk through one of their local markets. Later that evening, I also once again tested my fear of heights and went up to Vertigo Rooftop Bar at Banyan Tree on the 61st floor. The view was amazing but I have to admit, I wasn’t able to stay up there to long ….they do not call it the Vertigo Bar for nothing!
The rugby was entertaining to say the least …and very hot! The boys definitely suffered …hangovers, heat and rugby do not mix well! The Bangkok Hooters International Rugby Tens Tournament was a well organised tournament and we got to meet teams from around the world from as young as about 6 …to as old as 80! And there were a few ladies teams too …in fact our boys were pretty impressed with some of the talent of the ladies …..rugby talent ..that is!!!!
